Literature Text

A thin beam of sunlight shone through his window, and spilled onto the floor.

This was his favorite time of day.

For just a few minutes, the sun was in just the right place to shine through the buildings, and into his room.

He had always been enamored by the sun. A star of incomparable beauty, and unfathomable distance. A bright beacon in a sea of black. It belonged to everyone, and no one.

It shone all over the world, but in these few minutes, this one beam was all his. This slice of the heavens. All of its light, its warmth. Its love. It was his, and he didn’t have to share. A sliver of impossible radiance, existing only for him.

The light disappeared as quickly as it had come, plunging the room back into darkness. The cold after, that was the worst part. The inverse of afterglow.

He could go outside, he knew. But it wouldn’t be the same. It would be light without sincerity. Warmth without love.

It wouldn’t be special. It wouldn’t be his.

He would just have to wait until tomorrow.
